چکیده

This paper presents a set of parallel procedures for anisotropic mesh adaptation accounting for mixed element types used in boundary layer meshes, i.e., the presented procedures operate in parallel on distributed boundary layer meshes. The procedures accept anisotropic mesh metric field as an input for the desired mesh size field and apply local mesh modifications to adapt the mesh in order to match the specified mesh size field. The procedures fully account for the parametric geometry of curved domains and maintain the semistructured nature of the boundary layer elements. The effectiveness of the procedures are demonstrated based on three viscous flow examples that include the ONERA M6 wing, a heat transfer manifold, and a scramjet engine.

Parallel Adaptive Boundary Layer Meshing for CFD Analysis

This paper describes a parallel procedure for anisotropic mesh adaptation with boundary layers for use in scalable CFD simulations. The parallel mesh adaptation algorithm operates with local mesh modification operations developed for both unstructured and boundary layer parts of the mesh. The adaptive approach maintains layered elements near the viscous walls and accounts for the mesh modificat...

A Simplex Cut-Cell Adaptive Method for High-Order Discretizations of the Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations

While an indispensable tool in analysis and design applications, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is still plagued by insufficient automation and robustness in the geometryto-solution process. This thesis presents two ideas for improving automation and robustness in CFD: output-based mesh adaptation for high-order discretizations and simplex, cut-cell mesh generation. First, output-based mesh...

On 3D Anisotropic Local Remeshing for Surface, Volume and Boundary Layers

A simple strategy for generating anisotropic meshes is introduced. The approach belongs to the class of metric-based mesh adaptation procedures where a field of metric tensors governs the adaptation. This development is motivated by the need of generating anisotropic meshes for complex geometries and complex flows. The procedure may be used advantageously for cases where global remeshing techni...

Anisotropic mesh adaptation for CFD computations

Unstructured mesh adaptation is now widely used in numerical simulations to improve the accuracy of the solutions as well as to capture the behavior of physical phenomena. In this paper, we propose a general purpose error estimate based on the interpolation error that produces an anisotropic metric map used to govern the mesh element creation. Application examples of CFD computations are given ...

Unstructured Adaptive Moving Mesh Solution of Unsteady Shear Flows and Free-surface Flows

A method for performing anisotropic unstructured mesh adaptation is discussed that is well suited for computational fluid dynamics on parallel distributed memory computers. This algorithm which involves mesh motion, rather than refinement and coarsening, is fast, parallel, and fully conservative. The approach is effective at accurately capturing free-surface flows, boundary layers, and unsteady...
